Time Well Spent

In 1665 during the Great Plague, twenty-something Isaac Newton was sent home from London’s Trinity College to slow the spread of the disease. Newton used the time to think and discovered the law of gravity.  History has proven time spent in reflection often leads to creative solutions to hardships. Early this year, I found myself, like the rest of us, with time to just sit and think. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic and self-isolation, 2020 has been a challenging year for me. A broken collarbone during a daddy-daughter skiing weekend in Maine, followed shortly by the death of my father, gave me time to reflect and evaluate my priorities.  In April, I sensed COVID-19 was going to have a significant impact on the future of Petram, a marketing AI startup I was leading. I reached out to leaders across business segments and the government. My conversations made me realize most business and government leaders were not ready for what has become the most challenging times of our generation; balancing the lives and livelihood of our employees and customers. During my down time, I reflected on stories shared during my dad’s funeral about his selfless work and realized I wanted to focus on socio-economic recovery. I put a few cycles into using my knowledge & experience leveraging data and technology to create a path to recovery for our country.  I collaborated with tech leaders from around the country, across industries and government, to brainstorm solutions and create a path toward recovery, or end state. We all agreed, that in order to return to some sort of normalcy and restart our economy, targeted decision making would be needed rather than broad brushstrokes, and data driven applications would become a necessity. We created a blueprint and have made it available as part of endstatecoalition.com . We realized business leaders could not use the existing playbook and strategies. We need to innovate fast, continuously evolve, and do more with less. Goldfinch, a group of seasoned, data-driven, business professionals, was created to support leaders survive → revive → thrive in this new world.
